THE SCIENCE

Melanotan-2 is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that has been investigated for its activity at melanocortin receptors. Research has focused primarily on melanocortin receptor signaling, pigmentation biology, and related cellular responses.

MOLECULAR STRUCTURE

Melanotan-2 is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that has been investigated for its activity at melanocortin receptors. Research has focused primarily on melanocortin receptor signaling, pigmentation biology, and related cellular responses.

MELANOCORTIN RECEPTOR ACTIVITY

Research has examined Melanotan-2's interaction with melanocortin receptors, including MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. Different receptor subtypes are associated with distinct biological functions, including pigmentation, energy regulation, and other cellular signaling processes.

PIGMENTATION & MELANIN

Melanotan-2 was developed as a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a peptide involved in melanocortin signaling and pigmentation. Research has examined its ability to activate melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R, which plays an important role in melanocyte activity and melanin production. Human research has investigated changes in skin pigmentation following Melanotan-2 administration.

SEXUAL FUNCTION & MELANOCORTIN SIGNALING

Melanotan-2 has also been investigated for effects on sexual function. Human studies have reported penile erection and changes in sexual desire following administration, consistent with the role of melanocortin signaling in sexual arousal pathways. These findings come from relatively small clinical studies and should not be interpreted as establishing Melanotan-2 as an approved treatment for sexual dysfunction.

EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

  • Melanotan-2 has been investigated in laboratory and animal research examining melanocortin receptor activity and downstream physiological responses. Findings should be interpreted according to the experimental model, study design, and specific endpoints measured.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS

The available evidence for Melanotan-2 includes experimental and early human research, but this does not establish safety or effectiveness for general clinical use. Research findings should be distinguished from established medical indications and interpreted according to the specific study conditions.
