THE SCIENCE
Melanotan-1 (MT-I) is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that has been studied for its activity at melanocortin receptors. Research has focused primarily on MC1R signaling, melanin production, melanocyte activity, and skin pigmentation.
MOLECULAR STRUCTURE
Melanotan-1 is a synthetic analogue of α-MSH designed to retain melanocortin receptor activity. Its structure allows it to interact with melanocortin receptors involved in pigmentation and related cellular signaling.
MC1R RECEPTOR ACTIVITY
The melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) is a G-protein-coupled receptor expressed on melanocytes and is a key regulator of human pigmentation. Activation of MC1R increases intracellular signaling associated with melanogenesis and the production of eumelanin.
MELANIN PRODUCTION
Research has examined Melanotan-1 in relation to eumelanin production in human skin. Experimental human studies have reported increases in eumelanin following MT-I administration, with changes in the eumelanin-to-pheomelanin balance also observed under the conditions studied.
SKIN PIGMENTATION & TANNING
Human research has investigated Melanotan-1 in relation to skin pigmentation and tanning. Studies have reported measurable increases in pigmentation following experimental administration, including tanning responses in areas such as the face, neck, and forearm.
HUMAN RESEARCH
- Melanotan-1 has been investigated in human studies examining pigmentation, tanning, and melanin production. Research has included controlled studies involving human volunteers and investigations of differences in response associated with MC1R genetic variants.
RESEARCH LIMITATIONS
Research findings for Melanotan-1 should be interpreted according to the study population, formulation, experimental conditions, and specific endpoints measured. Findings from controlled research studies should not automatically be interpreted as establishing safety or effectiveness for general clinical or cosmetic use.
